Tiger Woods Was Severely Injured in A Car Crash

While Tiger Woods is often in the news due to his tremendous golf career, he’s unfortunately making headlines for a much more somber reason this week. On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, fire crews had to use a Halligan bar and axe to get Woods out of a single-car wreckage that severely fractured his right leg, requiring immediate surgery.

What Happened

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, emergency personnel were called to the accident scene after receiving a tip that a severe wreckage had occurred on Route 7 in Rancho Palos Verdes, an area located about 30 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles.

According to the police report, Woods, who was driving north at the time, hit a median and went across two southbound lanes before hitting a curb and tree and rolling over several hundred feet away from the road. Woods was driving his 2021 Genesis SUV and according to reports, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident – which most likely saved his life. When emergency help arrived, Woods was severely injured but alert and still able to communicate.

According to Alex Villanueve, a LA sheriff, the stretch of road where Woods’ accident occurred sees a high number of motor vehicle accidents due to the road’s deadly curve and downhill slopes. Because of these hazards, the road is marked with a number of signs alerting drivers of the potential dangers.

Law enforcement did not find any evidence that Woods was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the single-car accident. They also did not find any evidence of braking or skid marks, nor do they believe weather played a factor in the accident. They did state, however, that Woods was driving above the posted speed limit, which is 45 miles per hour on that stretch of road.

Update on His Condition

According to Dr. Anish Mahajan, the Chief Medical Officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the pro-golfer had several open fractures to his lower right leg that required surgery to place a rod in his tibia and screws and pins in both his foot and ankle. Dr. Mahajan stated that Woods is currently stable and responsive after the surgery.
