Beaver County Suit Claims Opioid-Related Industries Lied About Drugs’ Addictive Qualities

Today’s health care standards and health-related technological advances make this generation potentially the most health-care conscious generation in history. While our society experiences this unprecedented level of health care success, doctors, surgeons and drug companies are not infallible. When a hospital, doctor, pharmaceutical company or other health care professional injures a patient through either negligence or omission, the patient can bring a medical malpractice case against the party that injured them.

This month, Beaver County has decided to pursue a medical malpractice claim against a number of drug manufacturers, drug distributors, and physicians. The civil claim argues that these groups colluded to hide evidence indicating their pharmaceuticals were more dangerous than advertised. Last year, 102 people were victims of overdose with the highest risk age group ranging from 25 to 35 years old. The claim hopes to cover the wrongful deaths of the victims involved, the taxpayer cost of treatment and repeat overdoses. The claim hopes to convince the courts that pharmaceutical companies and doctors deliberately misrepresented the dangers and addictive qualities of the drugs they pushed. Sadly, these types of overdoses are not restricted to Pennsylvania but affect the entire nation. While this suit is restricted to those injured in Beaver County, the bringers of the case hope their actions will encourage more counties in Pennsylvania to take action. They hope that by costing the industry billions of dollars that they will be discouraged from acting recklessly in the future.
